The USS Constitution Museum is now accepting nominations for its 2020 Don Turner Award. Established in 1991, this award is named in honor of Don Turner, a former head of USS Constitution Maintenance and Repair Facility. It recognizes his singular contribution toward the preservation of “Old Ironsides” and the skills that built her, as well as his knowledge of and dedication to the ancient art of shipbuilding.
Mr. Turner was the first recipient of this award named in his honor. Since then, the Museum has honored others who are similarly dedicated to maritime preservation and advances in ship construction and design. Some recent recipients of the Don Turner Award include Elizabeth E. Meyer (2011), Peter M. Stanford (2012), Harold Burnham (2013), Ralph W. Stanley (2013), Nathaniel S. Wilson (2014), the Charles W. Morgan Restoration team (2014), Maine Windjammer Fleet (2015), Meghan E. Wren (2016), Naval History & Heritage Command Detachment Boston (2017), the PT-305 Restoration team from the National WWII Museum (2018), and the Schooner Ernestina-Morrissey Association (2019).
The USS Constitution Museum presents this award to a person or team of people (professional or amateur) who have contributed significantly to efforts to preserve important vessels or who have made significant contributions to our knowledge and understanding of ship design and construction.
