Journal Editor
This is approximately a quarter-time position. The Editor is an independent contractor and not an employee of the Nautical Research Guild.

The Nautical Research Guild is dedicated to advancing ship modeling through research and education. We publish the quarterly “Nautical Research Journal,” which serves as a vital resource for ship modelers, enthusiasts, researchers, and professionals in the maritime field, showcasing a range of articles, historical documentation, and appropriate technical applications.
Key Responsibilities
1. Oversee the entire production process of the “Nautical Research Journal” ensuring timely publication.
2. Source, edit, and manage content, including articles, maritime document transcripts, plans, book reviews, and shop notes. The editor should also endeavor to maintain a balance in the variety of article topics chosen for the content of the four issues in each annual volume.
3. Collaborate with authors and contributors to ensure high quality submissions that align with the Guild’s goals. (This includes verifying accuracy of historical event facts, correct period ship construction details and any other actions that may be required to police content for assured correctness.)
4. Prepare electronic files for submission to the printer, ensuring adherence to formatting guidelines and deadlines.
5. Contribute to the strategic direction of the Journal through written editorials of broad interest themes to enhance the publication.
Required Skills & Qualifications
1. Verifiable accreditation or certification in the areas of journalism, communications, maritime studies or any other related field.
2. Proven experience in editing and publishing within academic or professional settings.
3. Strong understanding of maritime topics and extensive knowledge of history. A solid knowledge of the many aspects of model ship building is necessary.
4. Knowledgeable in across-the-board technical aspects of word processing, digital imagery, separation of imagery from text, and hidden characters.
5. Solid grasp of the English language including differentiating between American, Canadian, and British unique applications.
6. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an eye for detail and accuracy.
7. Ability to work collaboratively and courteously with contributors, while managing multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
