Steamship Historical Society of America Awarded $250,000 Challenge Grant

The Warwick-based Steamship Historical Society of America is in line to receive its
largest grant ever after being selected by the Posner Foundation of Pittsburgh for a
$250,000 matching gift. Once achieved, the grant will be used to help fund program
enhancements at the Ship History Center on Post Road, and to share more of the
organization’s unique maritime collection online.
For more than a decade, the Posner family, through its foundation, has supported
SSHSA with strategic investments designed to advance its mission, reach, scope and
capabilities. New gifts and pledges made to the campaign through the end of 2022, or
until the challenge is fully funded, will qualify for the match.
“We are fortunate to be in this position because of the Posner Family’s thoughtfulness,
and genuine generosity,” SSHSA Executive Director Matthew Schulte said. “There’s good
reason as to why our campaign is called Full Ahead!, and we intend to remain on course
with our bold fundraising efforts.”
The challenge came with an additional $100,000 contribution to support other Full
Ahead! enrichments. These funds will bolster SSHSA’s digital capabilities and increase
capacity of the cloud-based virtual archives currently available on www.shiphistory.org .
Home of the group’s STEAMing into the Future educational program, the website is
growing in prominence as an online interactive experience aimed at educating students
about the country’s extensive maritime heritage.
The Full Ahead! campaign seeks to raise $3.5 million overall to properly archive and
interpret SSHSA’s impressive collection, which comprises hundreds of thousands of
images, objects, artifacts, periodicals, artwork, official records and memorabilia that help
tell an extensive history of powerful ships, their passengers and their crews. The Ship
History Center is currently open to researchers by appointment.

Fuller Shallop of Plimoth Patuxet To Visit Hull

The Fuller Shallop, a restored replica of the original shallop on board the Mayflower, and now a complement to the restored Mayflower II, is scheduled to arrive in Hull on Tuesday, June 14. The 33-foot, open vessel will tie up at Pemberton Pier for public viewing and for discussions and demonstrations by the Captain and crew from 11:00 am until 6:00 pm that evening.
Following public viewing, the Captain and crew will then be available at Shipwreck’d Restaurant for discussions with interested visitors from 6:00 to 7:00 pm followed by a 30 minute talk and slide show on the patio. Shipwreck’d will be open all day for meals and beverages as you enjoy your visit to the Fuller Shallop, and they invite you to stay a while longer to watch the sunset on Hull Bay. The shallop will depart Hull on Wednesday morning.
The original shallop was carried on board the pilgrim ship Mayflower, intended for use in exploring the surrounding waters and did so up through Boston Harbor and farther north. Plimoth Plantation built this replica of the 33′ vessel many years ago and over the past two years it has undergone a refit at Lowell’s Boat Shop in Amesbury. As part of the vessel’s reintroduction in Plymouth, the shallop will be touring several ports as they head back home to Plymouth.

The National Park Service (NPS) today announced $2.4 million in History of Equal Rights grants, through the Historic Preservation Fund, to fund 6 projects in 6 states that will preserve sites related to the struggle of all Americans for equality.
“As we begin the celebration of Pride Month, we reflect on the diverse and complex history of all Americans who fought for the equal rights of their people,” said NPS Deputy Director Shawn Benge. “The new History of Equal Rights grants program supports our state, tribal, local, and nonprofit partners in the physical preservation of historic sites related to the struggle for equal rights.”
Congress appropriated funding for the History of Equal Rights Grant Program in 2020 through the Historic Preservation Fund (HPF). The HPF uses revenue from federal oil leases on the Outer Continental Shelf, providing assistance for a broad range of preservation projects without expending tax dollars, with the intent to mitigate the loss of a non-renewable resource to benefit the preservation of other irreplaceable resources.
Established in 1977, the HPF is authorized at $150 million per year through 2023, and has provided more than $2 billion in historic preservation grants to states, tribes, local governments, and non-profit organizations. Administered by the NPS, HPF funds may be appropriated by Congress to support a variety of historic preservation projects to help preserve the nation’s cultural resources.

Sea & Sky celebrates the beauty of our coastal environment and the richness of the artistic community on the South Shore and beyond. We are excited to launch Getting Our Bearings, a new permanent exhibit, in our Main Street Gallery this season. Through a collection of objects, photographs, and primary source documents, the exhibit introduces the key themes of the Penobscot Marine Museum. It explores how maritime communities fed the Atlantic work, built America’s Merchant fleet, constructed pre-Civil War America, became America’s Vacationland, engaged in global trade, and served as homeports and homesteads. Museum visitors will get to see how the sea has impacted, and will continue to impact, daily life on and around Penobscot Bay.
