Nantucket Whaleship Two Brothers

Navy Art Traveling Exhibition Program

New York Historical Society: A traveling marine art exhibition titled The Coast and the Sea: Marine and Maritime Art in America. More than fifty paintings ranging in date from 1750 to 1904 and a small selection of maritime artifacts are included. The earlier paintings are in the Anglo-Dutch marine traditions and include nineteenth-century romantic seascapes; vernacular interpretations; busy harbors in ages of sail and steam; sea battles; shipwrecks, ship portraits; seaside recreation and coastal scenes. There is also a group of lively portraits of mariners in settings that reflect seafaring enterprises, as well as a selection of maritime artifacts. Many paintings have not been displayed for decades. A fully illustrated publication accompanies the exhibition, which is booked through February 2016. For a prospectus, checklist of contents, loan fee, sample travel costs and associated information, contact NYHS Curatorial Associate Alexandra Kreuger at (212) 873-3400 x502 or alexandra.krueger@nyhistory.org.
