Indigenous and Native Hawaiian leaders talk collaboration in sanctuaries

NEXT TUESDAY, September 21st, the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation invites you to join us for a Blue Beacon Series discussion, where Indigenous leaders from current and proposed sanctuaries will share how the involvement of their communities in stewardship of special places in the ocean benefits both people and place.

Join us on Facebook Live or livestreamed on our website at 7:00pm ET!

We are honored to be joined by Indigenous leaders, who will discuss how the inclusion of native Hawaiian cultural and conservation principles in the co-management of Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument has inspired other proposed national marine sanctuaries that celebrate and preserve cultural heritage, such as the proposed Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary, along California’s central coast.

  • Kalani Quiocho, Cultural Resources Coordinator, Pacific Islands Region, NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries
  • Brad Kaʻaleleo Wong, Kūkulu Papahānaumokuākea Program Specialist, Office of Hawaiian Affairs
  • Violet Sage Walker, Vice Chairwoman, Northern Chumash Tribal Council

We will also honor Patrick Pletnikoff, mayor of St. George Island in Alaska, who recently passed away. Mayor Pletnikoff was a steadfast proponent of a new marine sanctuary centered on the Unangan (Aleut) people.

Find biographies of our speakers on our website.

The virtual event will take place on Facebook Live at 7:00pm ET through our Blue Beacon Series: Embracing Collaborative Conservation in Future Sanctuaries Facebook event page and will also be streamed on our website.

RSVP today on the Facebook event page as “Going” or “Interested” to join us for this meaningful conversation. Mark your calendars – we look forward to seeing you on September 21st!

South Street Seaport Museum Honored to Participate in 9/11 Tribute in Light

South Street Seaport Museum will be a part of in the Tribute in Light, a commemorative public art installation first presented six months after 9/11 and then every year thereafter, from dusk to dawn on the night of September 11. It has become an iconic symbol that both honors those killed and celebrates the unbreakable spirit of New York.
The Seaport Museum will light blue the historic 1885 tall ship Wavertree on Pier 16 (Fulton and South Streets) and the 1913 Titanic Memorial Lighthouse (Fulton and Water Streets).
Capt. Jonathan Boulware, President and CEO of the South Street Seaport Museum, said, “On this 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, the South Street Seaport Museum is honored to partner with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in participating in ‘Tribute in Light’ by lighting up our 1885 tall ship Wavertree and the Titanic Memorial Lighthouse in sky blue. That day in our history had a tremendous impact on our beloved New York City and on the Museum and its staff, both then and now. Tonight, we collectively remember lives lost and forever changed as we pause to reflect on the moments of human and urban resilience that unfolded in the aftermath.”
As an extension of Tribute in Light, for the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum has once again partnered with NYC & Company and buildings throughout the city to light up their facades and rooftops in sky blue. Tribute in Light is a unique, but simple gesture of collective remembrance that will illuminate the city on the evening of September 11.
Current participants include the Empire State Building, Bloomberg L.P., the Perelman Performing Arts Center, One World Trade Center, 7 WTC, the Metropolitan Opera, Lincoln Center Plaza, New-York Historical Society, The Oculus, Brookfield Place, New York City Hall, Governors Island, Edge, RXR Realty, Helmsley Building, Bank of America Tower, Alexandria Real Estate, Barclays Bank, Bloomingdale’s 59th Street, Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Greater Ridgewood Historical Society – the Vander Ende Onderdonk Museum, NYC Fire Museum, Museum of the City of New York, National Lighthouse Museum, Alice Austen House, Pier 17 New York, 55 Water Street, Con Edison, Hudson Yards, DSNY Salt Shed Complex, NY Hall of Science, Queens Borough Hall, QC New York Spa, Goethals Bridge, Bayonne Bridge, JFK Air Traffic Control Tower, LGA West Parking Garage façade, Niagara Falls, Circle Line, NY Waterway, South Cove Marina, Bronx Terminal Market, The Shops at Columbus Circle, One Vanderbilt, 1515 Broadway, and the Times Square Ball. “Water Solutions: The Charles E. Meyer Desalination Plant” A Free Zoom Webinar by Malcolm Hamilton & Gaylen Fair

On Thursday, September 16, 2021 at 7pm, the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum will present “Water Solutions: The Charles E. Meyer Desalination Plant,” a free Zoom webinar with Malcolm Hamilton and Gaylen Fair of Santa Barbara’s Water and Wastewater utilities. The presentation is free, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Marie L. Morrisroe, but registration is required at https://sbmm.org/santa-barbara-events/

The Charles E. Meyer desalination plant produces 3 million gallons of drinking water on a daily basis, which accounts for about 30% of Santa Barbara’s use.  The speakers will discuss the City of Santa Barbara’s water supply and a history of the plant from initial construction through to the recent reactivation of the plant. They will also examine the current operation of the plant, including the reverse osmosis treatment process, facility layout, total cost of operation, and a tad bit of chemistry. Finally, the presentation will wrap up with a conversation about upcoming construction projects, a recent Water Supply Agreement with Montecito Water District, and the role of desalination in the City’s water supply portfolio.

This photography exhibit by Sean Baggett and Skip Tull captures just those special moments. On display through September.

Drones – Art in the Sky September 11 – October 3 Hull hosts an abundance of talented drone videographers who help us view the world from a different lens. September 18 brings 10th Elf Classic Yacht Race to St. Michaels

The Elf Classic Yacht Race returns to the Chesapeake Bay on Saturday, Sept.18, 2021, with the traditional yacht race taking place again this year on the Miles River in St. Michaels, Md. The annual race is jointly sponsored by the Classic Yacht Restoration Guild and the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, with proceeds benefitting both organizations.

“It’s very unusual to see a single classic yacht on any given day, so watching a fleet of them sailing away from the anchorage and into St. Michaels is an incredible experience,” said CYRG President and Elf skipper Rick Carrion. “The event will take place exclusively on the Miles River, offering land and sea spectators at CBMM an unparalleled view of some of the most beautiful, classic sailing yachts.”

The September race features a 19th century traditional yacht racing start, beginning with a captains’ meeting on land, followed by the boom of a cannon, signifying each captain’s mad dash to a tied-up dinghy, or tender. Next, the captains row out to their moored vessels and waiting crews, before tying up their tenders and raising anchor, with up to 30 yachts racing on the Miles River under a cloud of sail.

Race participants will first be greeted along CBMM’s Fogg’s Cove and the winners announced at a trophy reception later in the day. Entrance to watch the race is included with CBMM’s regular two-day admission.

“Spectators and guests are welcome to watch this unique 11am start, and spend the day at CBMM to explore the world-renowned museum, while watching the race from shore,” said Carrion. “As the race ends, captains will anchor off Fogg’s Cove, and row to shore to sign the race log on CBMM’s Steamboat Building’s deck. A post-race reception and awards ceremony will then be held.”

Organized by CYRG, the race features America’s oldest active racing yacht, the 1888 Elf. Restored to historically accurate condition and re-launched in 2008, Elf is a Lawley-built 30-foot class cutter. Elf pioneered offshore yacht cruising in 1893 by being the first small craft to race the round-trip from Marblehead, Mass. to Halifax, N.S.

For race registration information, visit cyrg.org or contact CYRG’s Rick Carrion at cyrg.elf@gmail.com or 443-566-2212. CYRG is a non-profit, member organization dedicated to the preservation of maritime heritage through the maintenance and operation of Elf. The yacht was designed by George Lawley & Sons of South Boston, Mass., and built in 1888 for William H. Wilkinson. Over the warmer months, Elf can be seen dockside at CBMM, and under sail along the Miles River and Chesap
