San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park Blogs and Podcasts
San Francisco Maritime NHP introduces the new podcast Better Lives, Bitter Lies. This fun and educational audio series, created and hosted by park guides Anne Monk and Sabrina Oliveros, will premiere on the Park’s website (https://www.nps.gov/safr/learn/photosmultimedia/podcasts.htm) on Tuesday, July 14, 2020.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, all manner of ships sailed into San Francisco Bay, bringing people drawn by the promise of a better life. For many of these newcomers, seeking new lives meant living with ideas – created about their destination, their destinies, and themselves – that shaped both their personal histories and the history of San Francisco’s waterfront. Better Lives, Bitter Lies examines several of these ideas, using San Francisco Bay Area points of interest as springboards for lively, enlightening discussions.
Beginning with the first episode, “Chrysopylae” – which reviews popular beliefs about the naming of the Golden Gate Bridge – Monk and Oliveros use historical documents, firsthand accounts, literature, music, and conversations with experts to examine how these ideas took the form of myth, mistruth, propaganda, or outright falsehood.
A new episode will appear every two weeks on the Park’s podcast page: https://www.nps.gov/safr/learn/photosmultimedia/podcasts.htm
Future episodes will include “Gold Mountain,” “Paper Children,” “Daughters of Joy,” “A Deadly Trade,” “Little Brown Brothers,” and a feature on the multifaceted stories carried by the park’s iconic square-rigged cargo ship, Balclutha. Check the park’s website and social media channels for future releases!
Also, the Park has its own official blog now at https://www.nps.gov/safr/blogs/around-the-horn.htm

Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA re-opens on July 18
Virtual Tall Ships Festival Project
The Ocean Institute is looking at creating a virtual tall ships festival:
Dear CAMM Colleagues,
Like so many of you, Ocean Institute had been working hard to come up with creative ways to stay productive and mission focused during these difficult times. Following fellow CAMM members has been inspiring, the resolve and passion demonstrated has been amazing to watch.
Historically Ocean Institute would have been hosting the 36th Annual Tall Ships festival in Dana Point Harbor, CA on September 11-13, 2020. Unfortunately, traditional events have had to make quick adjustments or cancel for the 2020 season.
This year in an effort of unity and creativity we are looking to hold a virtual festival with a wide reach of ships and maritime institutions from around the world.
We will share additional information as the event draws near, but wanted to reach out to our ocean partners to encourage you to participate!
CAMM MEMBERS WANTED!
We have an innovative and interactive program brewing and we would love our maritime friends across the nation (and beyond) to join us!
Intrigued? Please fill out the brief form below and/or shoot us a quick note and we will arrange a time to Zoom with you to share more about the program.

We are hopeful that we can band together to offer a special experience that celebrates the beauty and splendor of Tall Ships while shining a light on the related organizations and programs.
Thank you!
