African American Civil Rights Grant Program

The National Park Service (NPS) is proud to announce the expansion of the African American Civil Rights Grant Program (AACR). This year the program will document, interpret, and preserve sites telling the full story of the long struggle for African American civil rights from the transatlantic slave trade onwards. Grants are awarded through a competitive process and do not require non-Federal match.

Congress has appropriated $15.5 million for the AACR program.

History of Equal Rights Grant Program

The National Park Service (NPS) is proud to announce a new competitive civil rights grant program. The History of Equal Rights Grant Program (HER) will preserve sites related to the struggle to achieve the ideal of equal rights in America. Grants are awarded through a competitive process and do not require non-Federal match.

Congress has appropriated $2.5 million for the HER program.

Save America’s Treasures Grant Program

The Save America’s Treasures (SAT) grant program was established in 1998 and first awarded grants in 1999 to help preserve nationally significant historic properties and collections that convey our nation’s rich heritage to future generations. The SAT program is administered by the NPS in cooperation with its partners, Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).

Congress has appropriated $16 million for the SAT program.

Applications are due January 26, 2021.

The Great Circle is a peer-reviewed journal published twice a year by the
Australian Association for Maritime History. The Great Circle publishes
articles (maximum length 8,000 words), research notes (3,000 words),
updates to earlier articles and book reviews (maximum length 1,000 words). It
has an established scholarly reputation both within Australia and overseas,
and is indexed and available on JSTOR.
We are seeking papers for a general edition, on any aspect of maritime
history, which will be of interest to broad audiences. Topics include maritime
archaeology and heritage, oceanic exploration and discovery, maritime trade
and commerce, oceanic migration and travel, military and defence. Articles
can explore sites and objects, events, organisations and people associated
with them. The submission date for manuscripts is 31 January2021, for
publication in the first biannual edition for 2021.

Sites of armed conflict are part of our American heritage – how do you want to preserve and share what makes a battlefield or site of conflict important to your community? 

The National Park Service’s American Battlefield Protection Program wants community and historical organizations to know that Battlefield Preservation Planning Grants are available to help. These grants are awarded annually and competitively to State, local, and tribal governments, other public entities, non-profit organizations, and educational institutions. Eligible projects must focus on planning for, interpreting, and protecting battlefields and historic sites associated with armed conflicts on American soil from any time period in history. Grants fund two-year projects involving research, documentation, oral history, community engagement activities, interpretation and education, preservation planning, and more. They donot require matching funds.

The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) will present its 2021 Annual Conference as a hybrid meeting. The onsite meeting will be in Little Rock, AR, on September 22-25. The virtual meeting date has not been announced but will be in September or October. AASLH is now accepting proposals for all session formats and workshops. Peter Armstrong is appointed the next president and CEO of Mystic Seaport Museum, the organization’s board of trustees announced today. An accomplished museum professional with more than 25 years of experience on two continents, Armstrong joins the Museum from the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, where he is Senior Director of Museum Operations and Education. The board also announced the appointment of Dr. Christina Connett Brophy as Senior Vice President of Curatorial Affairs and Senior Director of Museum Galleries.

“We are excited about the appointments of Peter and Christina as they bring well-honed, complementary talents to MSM. Peter has extensive management skills and experience as director of operations of a large and complex museum organization combined with great marketing knowhow. Christina brings outstanding maritime museum curatorial experience and demonstrated success in innovative programming and exhibitions development,” said Michael S. Hudner, Chair of the Mystic Seaport Museum Board of Trustees. “Both Peter and Christina have had exceptional achievements in broadening and diversifying more traditional audiences with new approaches to increase the appeal of well-known institutions to a changing world.”

MATITSA in Maine is a cultural exchange network of individuals and institutions preserving and providing access to historic wooden boats and traditional boatbuilding skills.  We hope to contribute to and participate in the Matitsa: preservation and development of northern wooden shipbuilding project, which is an open platform for skilled workers, amateurs and experts in wooden shipbuilding. Matitsa’s mission is to return the traditional wooden boat back to life; try to understand what it is and thus to answer the question “Who we are and why we live here”.  The project is based out of Arkhangelsk, Russia, with partners in Scandinavia and the US thus far.

MATITSA in Maine will contribute and participate by exchanging wooden boatbuilding technology and teaching techniques, and connecting traditional wooden boat and ship collecting institutions to each other across the globe.  One avenue is to contribute to the matitsa.ru website, which will list partners and feature content from each partner site.  Another is to attend the virtual and in-person Matitsa forums in April and July 2021.
