Historic Naval Ships Association seeks a new executive director

 POSITION DESCRIPTION

Position Title: Executive Director, Historic Naval Ships Association , Inc. (HNSA)

Reports to: President, Historic Naval Ships Association , Inc.

Position Purpose: Serve as the chief executive officer of the HISTORIC NAVAL SHIPS ASSOCIATION , INC.

The Mission of HNSA is to support preservation of historic Naval vessels and to act as a strategic advocate for its members. As such the Executive Director needs to be an advocate and develop relationships with government officials, contractors and other museum organizations that will enhance the mission.

Position Purpose Summary: The Executive Director will plan and coordinate Association activities. Activities include but are not limited to:

1. Developing relationships within the Navy and within the Federal government that increase awareness of HNSA and the needs of its members.

2. Developing a vital and involved Association membership constituency and leverage the use of social media platforms to grow membership and interest in HNSA and its members.

3. Maintaining effective and substantive communications with Members and others in the historic ship community. This ordinarily includes some travel to visit Fleet Members

4. Leading planning and preparation for all Association meetings.

5. Actively participating with other authorized professional organizations to further the preservation and presentation of historic ships.

Position Work Involves

1. Interpreting and implementing policies and practices of the Association.

2. Evaluating effectiveness of Association programs and communicating to the appropriate committee or to the Board as a whole how to better attain effectiveness.

3. Implementing goals and objectives established in the Association’s Strategic Plan.

4. Serving as the principal advisor to the Board of Directors and making recommendations to the Board of Directors for improvements or changes to the operation of the Association.

5. Representing the Association before executive, Congressional and legislative officials; historical organizations; preservation organizations and the general public.

6. Visiting and reporting on at least three (3) Fleet Members annually.

7. Conducting Association business. This is an administrative and leadership position. The Executive Director does not supervise staff, except as subcontracted and approved by the Board of Directors. The Executive Director is responsible for:

  • Keeping a record of work accomplished; correspondence files; and financial controls.
  • Negotiating and drafting contracts for appropriate services, including required levels of insurance.
  • Providing guidance and support to committees appointed by the president.
  • Establishing and maintaining a formal invoice system for Association Membership dues.
  • Publishing/distributing a written report at the annual Association meeting

Work is performed with a high degree of independent judgment within the scope of Association policy. Work is reviewed by the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors for attainment of goals and objectives.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1. Knowledge of the principles and practices of public administration, including financing, fundraising, supervision, budgeting and general organization functions.

2. General Knowledge of the principles and practices for the preservation of historic and cultural property.

3. Knowledge of naval history.

4. Knowledge of the maritime historical movement in the United States and the activities and goals of historical and preservation fields.

5. Ability to plan, organize, direct, and coordinate all Association programs and activities. including the research and documentation of information on ships histories, technical services to Fleet Members and related organizations, historic preservation, museum development and administration, historic site restoration and interpretation, and administration of an archives and records.

6. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely in oral and written form.

7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with government officials, historical societies, preservation groups and the general public.

Minimum Experience and Training:

Five years in a major administration and programs position with broad and diversified responsibilities and a bachelor’s degree with major course work in maritime or Navy- related studies. (Preferred by not required).

Basic knowledge of and proficiency with QuickBooks or similar financial software, Microsoft Office 365, and knowledge consistent with being able to oversee contractors working on website, email account and publishing.
