The New Bedford Whaling Museum (“Museum”) is the familiar name for the entity that is the Old Dartmouth Historical Society, founded in 1903.  Through its exhibitions, publications and programs, the Museum brings to life an international and multicultural canvas of stories, including:

  • Amazing voyages of early whalers and explorers and the remote places and peoples they encountered;
  • The habits and habitats of whales and marine mammals through the ages;
  • The industrial revolution and growth of New England’s textile mills and other industries;
  • A diversity of peoples seeking religious, racial, and social tolerance whose histories intersect there, and pioneers of all colors; and
  • A proud maritime heritage of shipbuilding, yacht design, and life with the sea.

The Museum is also making new history with its national award-winning high school apprenticeship program, and with unique partnerships that advocate for our oceans and for whales today.

The Museum houses a vast and valuable collection of fine and decorative art and artifacts; 25 galleries; a research library whose archives of logbooks, photographs, records, and rare documents have become internationally renown; the dramatic full skeletons of five whales; and the Lagoda – an 89-foot half scale model of a full-rigged whaling ship.

The President & CEO Opportunity

This is the rare opportunity to take the helm of a vibrant and healthy organization and steer it into the future. The Museum has had nine consecutive years of positive financial results, during which it constructed a new building and doubled its endowment.  There is a wealth of staff and volunteer talent, growing community involvement, partnerships with numerous organizations, a fully vested Board of Trustees and a broad base of donor support.

Ideal Candidates:

We are particularly interested in candidates with the following professional and personal qualities, skills and experience:

  • A strategic, tactical and entrepreneurial leader able to develop and articulate a vision for the Museum’s next chapter;
  • An ambassador and fundraiser who can share the mission and vision with the outside world and help to expand the institution’s role more broadly;
  • A seasoned executive with strong staff, operational and financial management experience; and
  • A sincere passion for the mission of the Museum and a commitment to bringing its mission to the residents of New Bedford and surrounding communities, and far beyond.

Additional information on the Museum and the role can be found here.

CAMM Member Organizations and Disaster Preparedness

Disaster preparedness is a topic of interest to all museums. Recent severe storms and natural disasters have demonstrated the particular vulnerability of maritime museums located on or near the water.  Numerous CAMM member organizations have sites and resources that have experienced flooding, inundation, or environmental threats to buildings, ships, and docks in recent years.

As an organization, CAMM is hoping to further the conversation on how best to plan and prepare with a conference session at the 2018 CAMM Annual Conference in Bermuda this April. Our hosts at the Bermuda Maritime Museum are certainly well versed in dealing with hurricanes, and we welcome other member perspectives and experiences on this important topic.

This Maritime Museum Emergency and Disaster Preparedness and Recovery Manual that CAMM put together in the mid 1990’s holds much useful and relevant information.

More immediately, here is how you can help our member organizations impacted by hurricane Harvey directly:

The Houston Maritime Museum reported no major damage from hurricane Harvey to their existing facility and collections.  Recently, the museum has begun a capital campaign to build on a new site – yet to be assessed.  Museum Director Lisa Bowlin’s letter outlines their plans for the future.  Explore ways you can help the museum here.

Galveston Historical Foundation reopened its numerous attractions on Friday, September 1 with free admission to most sites, including the Texas Seaport Museum and the Tallship Elissa, through the Labor Day weekend. All foundation sites weathered the storm relatively well and underwent cleanup efforts in the immediate aftermath of the storm. Of note, the 1877 Tall Ship Elissa was not damaged. The Bayfront Maritime Center and Big Ideas Learning Announce their new Partnership

Richard Eisenberg from the Bayfront Maritime Center (Erie, Pennsylvania) and Matthew Totzke from Big Ideas Learning are pleased to announce the creation of a partnership to help complete the 1812 Schooner Porcupine and create STEM related curriculum for use aboard the Schoolship for Presque Isle Bay.

Big Ideas Learning, an Erie company which creates research-based, rigorous, and coherent mathematics curriculum for middle and high school students, has agreed to multi-year funding to help with the vessel’s construction and to create programming for the Schooner Porcupine. Big Ideas Learning has presented BMC with a $25,000 check and is committed to gifting an additional $25,000 in 2018.  Support will continue for an additional five years after next year, providing funding and maritime themed math curriculum for onboard programming.

Based on a War of 1812 Navy Gunboat built in Erie by Daniel Dobbins, Porcupine is currently being built from a donated fiberglass hull and will more than quadruple the capacity of any current BMC vessel. Day sail education programs will host 30 students and teachers, or passengers. Up to 12 students will sail aboard for overnight and multi-day programs. Onboard participants will study the bay’s ecology and water quality, navigation, meteorology, Shipwreck Science, and explore decades of Erie’s maritime history. After sailing with Perry’s fleet in the Battle of Lake Erie and several other War of 1812 campaigns, the Schooner Porcupine sailed for 60 years!

This new partnership between BMC and Big Ideas Learning will meld middle and high school mathematics with experiential hands-on learning aboard the Schooner Porcupine. This unique approach will broaden the student’s comprehension of the real-life practical applications of mathematics and science which will help engage students and empower them to aspire to be more: to achieve success in the classroom, get jobs that sustain themselves and their families, and pursue higher education and to become life-long learners.

“I am very pleased to announce this partnership,” said BMC Director, Richard Eisenberg. “Education today is rapidly changing and requires new and innovative thinking.”  “We share a similar vision with BMC,” said Matthew Totzke, CEO of Big Ideas Learning. “Together we can meet the challenge of providing opportunities for students to connect classroom learning to their daily lives and to explore the real world in engaging and meaningful ways.”

Historic Steamboat Sabino Returns to Service August 2, 2017

CAMM Members – some more good news about historic vessels at out Member institutions returning to service:

Historic Steamboat Sabino Returns to Service August 2
National Historic Landmark at Mystic Seaport is Oldest Coal-Fired Vessel Operating on a Regular Schedule in U.S.

 Mystic, Conn. (July 31, 2017) — Mystic Seaport announced today it will resume operating its steamboat Sabino for public cruises on the Mystic River Wednesday, August 2. The vessel has been under restoration in the Museum’s Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard for more than two years and is the oldest coal-fired steamboat in regular operation in the United States. Mystic Seaport operates her as a working exhibit providing passengers with an authentic early 20th century steamboat experience.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ox0joWBsQI&w=560&h=315]

“We are very proud to return Sabino to work on the Mystic River as she has done for more than 40 years. As the only one of our four National Historic Landmark vessels we regularly operate, she is the best example of our philosophy of preservation and active use,” said Steve White, president of Mystic Seaport.

 Sabino will operate six days a week from the Mystic Seaport waterfront through October 9. There will be three cruises per day: a 30-minute upriver cruise for $8 per person at 2:30 p.m., a 90-minute downriver cruise to the mouth of the Mystic River for $18 per person at 3:30 p.m., and a two-hour downriver cruise at 5:30 p.m. for $25 per person. There will also be a two-hour downriver cruise at 11:30 a.m. on Sundays for $25 per person. The boat will not operate on Tuesdays.

Museum admission is not required for downriver cruises; it is required for the 30-minute cruise. Children 3 and younger ride for free, but they must have a ticket to board. Tickets can be purchased up to two weeks in advance by calling 860.572.5331.

 Sabino can carry 74 passengers and is available for group charters.

 About Sabino
Sabino was built in 1908 in East Boothbay, Maine, and spent most of her career ferrying passengers and cargo between Maine towns and islands. She is 57 feet long and has a beam of 23 feet. Her hull is constructed of wood and she is powered by a 75-horsepower two-cylinder compound steam engine. The engine is the original power plant that was installed in 1908 and was manufactured by the J. H. Paine & Son Co. in nearby Noank, Connecticut. Steam is generated by a coal-fired boiler. Sabino came to Mystic Seaport in 1973 and she was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1992.

The recent restoration began in December 2014 and addressed a number of issues around the vessel, including reframing much of the stern, replacing the keel bolts, installing new planking and decking, and restoring portions of the superstructure. In addition, numerous mechanical and systems upgrades were carried out, most notably the fabrication and installation of a new boiler to meet modern safety and regulatory requirements. The restoration is expected to keep Sabino in operation for at least the next 25 to 30 years.

Financial support for the project was provided by a combination of private philanthropy and public grants, including $172,125 from the Connecticut State Historic Preservation Office, $149,318 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and a National Maritime Heritage Grant of $199,806 administered by the National Park Service in partnership with the U.S. Maritime Administration.
